MicroActive™ Lutein Complex
MicroActive™ Lutein is a scientifically proven highly-bioavailable lutein using b-cyclodextrin to carry lutein through to absorption thereby facilitating consistent uptake into the circulatory system. b-Cyclodextrin is a natural product from starch with GRAS status. It is used extensively in the pharmaceutical industry to increase bioavailability and ensure consistent dosages.
Lutein Esters' and 'Free lutein' are hydrophobic carotenoids requiring dietary fats for intestinal absorption. Lutein forms an aqueous micellar suspension with digested dietary fats. Thus Lutein and its esters competes for access to the fats with other carotenoids rendering its uptake is dependent upon the total available fats in the system.
With MicroActive™ Lutein Complex each lutein molecule is surrounded by cyclodextrin molecules, making it water dispersible. The cyclodextrin carries the lutein to the absorption site where it is presented to the cells at the intestinal wall. These cells receive the lutein and the cyclodextrin is then broken down into component simple carbohydrates by the gut microflora.
By avoiding the need for micellarization, MicroActive™ Lutein Complex directly enters the aqueous phase and neither competes with other carotenoids nor depends upon total dietary fats.
Studies using CaCo2 cell models and human trials show consistent results: MicroActive™ Lutein Complex is more bioavailable as compared to the leading brands of lutein beadlets and softgel formulations . The results indicate that MicroActive™ Lutein Complex; is almost three times as bioavailable as currently available beadlets or softgels. In the CaCo2 Studies the cyclodextrin complexation enhanced lutein uptake by the cells even in the absence of micellarization or phospholipids!!!
Variability in Lutein Uptake: A recent study at the University of Illinois concluded that lutein esters were as bioavailable as free lutein. While the statistics supported the conclusion, a more interesting observation was that neither the lutein nor the esters provided consistent uptake across subjects and there is doubt whether it provided intra-subject consistency over time. This observation is reasonable given the various systemic factors that effect transfer and absorption. The marketer and consumer alike can wonder just how much lutein or ester is absorbed with each dose. This is especially important for consumers having degenerative diseases or dietary restrictions in fat intake due to weight loss plans or physician's recommendations. Alternatively MicroActive™ Lutein Complex is more universally bioavailable with subjects showing the weakest absorption of lutein crystals having the greatest increase with the Complex. MicroActive™ Lutein Complex therefore presents a safe and effective way of providing lutein with improved bioavailability and consistent uptake.
